Cigarette Smoking At SUNY Purchase

SUNY Purchase— There’s a lot of concern at Purchase about the termination of the sale of cigarettes on campus and whether there will be designated areas or a smoke free campus.

“No, I’m not a smoker but I do feel it would lose the store a lot of money, and no the school should not have designated smoking areas,” said, Alyissa Woods, 19.

At the start of the fall semester the school stopped selling cigarettes due to its values of health, wellness, and environmental wellbeing. It was said to be an “old practice,” by President Schwartz, and did not support the principles of the school. Most students disagree and feel that it is their right to smoke cigarettes and that it is legal to do so.

“I am not a smoker, the non- sale of cigarettes was a good idea, we are an institution and it looks bad. But my feelings are that students should be free to smoke wherever they want. I definitely support the wellness of the students,” said Zane Smith, 18.

Fair populations of students on campus are smokers and taking away the cigarettes from the bookstore created an inconvenience for them. Now the place to get them is at local stores off of campus grounds or anywhere they can find them.

“No, I’m not a smoker; I definitely support the non-sale of cigarettes on campus. Everyone should fell free comfortable for smokers and non-smokers. There should be designated areas where students are allowed to smoke,” said arts management student, Haley Jacobs, 19.

The students have been finding other means of getting the cigarettes and at a cheaper price. The student life is fully aware of what they need to do to stay healthy but it is their own choice to smoke cigarettes and should feel free and okay to do so.

Lillly Egan, 19,an actor, said. “No, not a smoker. I do think that it’s been proven that smoking isn’t good for you, and not selling cigarettes is not going to change the dynamic of students and they will not stop smoking. They will just find other means of getting cigs that may even cause the school damage.”

Some students support the non sale but do feel that others should feel free to their right to smoke. The issue has become a topic of interest among the students at Purchase. They are expressing their feelings concerns and rights. The possibility of a campus wide meeting may be a thing in the future and the students are ready to go with everything they have.

“If the meetings are set up anything like the strategic planning meetings than the students voices and opinions won’t even matter,.” said, Egan.

The student population will continue to voice themselves and smoke feely as they want.

New York schools have been back in session for three weeks now and students are beginning to feel the burn. At SUNY Purchase construction is underway as the new renovations begin to happen. The plans for the 2012 year appears to have a negative affect on the student population.
